A good wash, in four parts

None of this is complicated. Here is the routine we suggest, whichever products you use.

  1. A man and a young girl folding a towel across a wooden table
    1

    Sort by fabric first

Cotton and linen go together. Wool, silk and anything with a hook gets its own wash or a mesh bag.

  2. A man pouring detergent into a small glass measure above a washing machine
    2

    Measure it

A standard load takes about 30 ml. More detergent means more rinsing, so the line on the glass is worth following.

  3. A father holding a toddler while hanging small clothes on a beech drying rack
    3

Dry it in the air when you can

Sun and a breeze suit sheets. Knits dry flat, away from a radiator, and small things go on the rack.

  4. A couple placing folded sweaters on a wooden shelf
    4

    Put it away well

Fold sweaters instead of hanging them. A sachet or a cedar block on the shelf adds a little scent to the cupboard.

Keep the bottle, refill from a pouch

A Detergent Refill holds 1.5 L, enough to fill a 500 ml bottle three times. It costs $84, against $114 for three new bottles of the same detergent.

Pouches have a screw spout and fold down as they empty. Check local rules before you dispose of an empty one.

Before you buy

How much detergent do I use?

About 30 ml for a standard load in a standard or high-efficiency machine, and 45 ml for a large or very soiled load. The Glass Measure has lines at 15, 30 and 45 ml.

Are your products eco-friendly or non-toxic?

We do not use those words. They mean different things to different people and are hard to back up as a blanket claim. We list what is in each product on its page and on the label, so you can decide for yourself. Treat every product as a household cleaner and keep it out of reach of children and pets.

Is Nursery Wash right for sensitive skin?

We make no claim about skin. Nursery Wash has no added fragrance or dye, and that is all we can tell you. If anyone in your home reacts to a detergent, stop using it and talk to your doctor.

How do refills work?

Each pouch has a screw spout. Pour it slowly into a clean glass bottle, close the pouch and store the rest somewhere cool and dry. The 1.5 L detergent pouch fills a 500 ml bottle three times.

Can I open a bottle and still return it?

Opened liquids, powders and soap cannot be resold, so we only take them back if they arrived damaged or faulty, or if the product caused a reaction. Unopened items can be returned within 30 days.

Do cedar blocks keep moths away?

We sell them for the scent of the wood and we make no pest control claim. Clean storage and regular airing are the most useful things you can do for wool.
